It is recognised at Tollesby the Importance of working closely with a range of parties that include other local schools and colleges, the Local Authority, Health, Police and the local community. Students at Tollesby are valued both as individuals and as part of the wider school community. Tollesby School fully supports the Every Child Matters Agenda and aims to include the five key outcomes for Children in all areas of our school.

Two years ago we took over the building vacated by Holmwood School after thirty years of sharing the site, in December 2009 building work will begin on our new home which will be located at the rear of our current building, we are expected to move to this new home in 2011.

Curriculum

Pupils who attend Tollesby access a broad and balanced curriculum that is differentiated to meet the needs of all individual young people.

In both KS3 & KS4 pupils receive 25 hours a week teaching and they access all National Curriculum subjects except MFL. Years 7 and 8 pupils follow ‘Opening Minds’, a competency based curriculum which gives the pupils the opportunity to develop their learning skills, these skills are transferable and will enable them to access the curriculum and achieve at a level that is appropriate to each of them. It is very important to us at Tollesby that the young people who leave us at the end of Year 11 have accessed a curriculum that not only allows them to achieve nationally recognised qualifications but helps them to grow, mature and develop into responsible citizens.

Behaviour

Ethos

The school ethos is based on genuine attitudes of positive care, mutual respect, and firm and consistent application of rules.

The behaviour and discipline policy is seen as a fundamental part of the work of the school. In applying it, all branches of the school will seek to work openly and cooperatively with pupils, parents, and other stakeholders, to ensure that all pupils receive the best possible education appropriate to their present and future needs.

Assertive Discipline

Assertive discipline is used across the school. Positive classroom management allows teachers to apply rules, rewards and consequences consistently and it gives pupils the opportunity to develop responsibility for their choices. We believe that praise should be generously employed whenever possible to motivate pupils, enhance their self-esteem to encourage them to progress further.
