Havelock Road 

The Havelock Road Site is our Secondary School site for pupils aged 11 to 16. We are located near Southall in Middlesex. We follow a Secondary model and all our pupils have access to a varied and broad curriculum, including the National Curriculum.

Everything that we do starts and ends with what is best for our pupils. We are a dynamic and caring staff team who constantly adapt to ensure that our pupils receive the best care and education in a nurturing, stimulating and safe learning environment. We would like to develop our team further.

We are looking for people who are conscientious, caring, and enthusiastic. We want people who have good problem solving skills and a strong sense of humour. In return you will have the privilege of working with our wonderful pupils and being part of a truly caring team. You will have the opportunity to develop a deep and empathetic knowledge of autism. The Sybil Elgar School is regarded as a centre of excellence in Autism specific training and uses a range of well established strategies and teaching methods to support young people with Autism including:

  • SPELL (Structure, Positive, Empathy, Low arousal and Links)
  • TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children)
    Studio III (positive student centred behaviour support)
  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
  • Makaton symbols and signing
  • Multisensory approaches

The school offers certified training of a very high standard in the above strategies to all staff.

It is a single storey purpose built site with provision for wheelchairs. Facilities include: Gymnasium/Dining Hall, Kitchen, Library, Music Therapy Rooms, Science Laboratory, Speech Therapy Room (group and single provision), Food Technology Room, Information Technology Room, Art Base, Multi-sensory room, Visitor’s and Family Room, Students’ common room, English and Maths Base and individual Tutor rooms. The School has four outdoor recreational areas, which have been recently upgraded.  

Further Education Unit (Woodlands Centre, Acton) 

“The Further Education Department of Sybil Elgar, based in Acton, has a strong arts ethos, particularly in the expressive and performing arts. Each student has an Individual Education Programme in which they are involved, and which aims at improving communication and independence. A strong physical skills programme is also considered crucial for our students.”

The Woodlands Centre was opened as a separate Further Education Unit (FEU) in September 2000. The centre shares a building with the NAS service, The Acton Centre. (19+ provision) and is in the grounds of Acton and West London College. Facilities include a large central hall with six tutorial bases, a Students’ Common Room, Library, large teaching Kitchen, Cafeteria, Drama and Movement Studio, Multi-sensory facility, Music Room, Art Studio, and Information Communication Technology Centre.

The Centre is ideally placed for inclusion into the mainstream college and access to the local community and amenities.

Residential Base (Corfton Road, Ealing)

The Corfton Road Site is our Residential site for some of our pupils and students from our two School sites.  We are located in Ealing, West London.

We have up to 26 students, most of whom are weekly boarders. We are currently developing our weekend and holiday respite provision. We provide high quality and caring provision. We are proud of the respectful and person centred high quality care we give to our students. We offer opportunities for our students to develop their leisure, social and key life skills in a safe, relaxing and homely environment.

We are within easy walking distance to Ealing Broadway and make full use of our local environment with many trips out to shopping centres, restaurants, cinemas and parks. We currently need people who are able to both work effectively as part of a team and using their own initiative. You will need to have good communication and problem solving skills. You will need to be flexible and responsible. You will have the opportunity to develop a strong career path and appropriate areas of interest professionally. We have a thorough induction and training programme, including NVQs, with structured supervisions and line management system. You will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment with varied and exiting activities and the potential to work flexible shifts.

The residential accommodation is based at Corfton Road, Ealing and consists of four sleeping areas (one for girls, one for younger pupils and two for older students) in addition to the garden and shared dining and leisure areas. It enables easy walking access to Ealing Broadway and a wide range of public amenities for students to visit during their leisure time. The premises allow most students to have their own rooms with some sharing double rooms, in a homely environment.

The School operates 3 minibuses, but attempts to utilise public transport as much as possible. Extensive use of public amenities is made, including libraries, swimming pools, shopping centres, local youth clubs, museums and art galleries, theatres and other places of public interest.

The School employs a large staff of over 80 people including Teachers, Classroom Assistants, Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist, Transitiuon Link Worker input, plus Administrative, Caretaking and domestic staff. In addition we have the services of consultants in psychiatry and psychology. The Community Medical Officer of Health, the local dental service for schools and our local group medical practice monitor the children’s health.

Students come from over 30 Local Education Authorities who pay the fees, maintain statements on the students and are responsible for transportation of students between home and school.
