South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides healthcare from two main hospital sites – The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
As healthcare never stands still it is important we remain forward thinking and look to the future to develop our services – and staff – to meet the needs and expectations of the population we serve.
As a Foundation Trust, we intend to deliver the services people want and expect to have available in their local hospitals (for example diagnostic tests and surgery such as joint replacements) and the more specialist services which people travel to The James Cook University Hospital for, such as specialist heart services, radiotherapy, brain surgery and kidney treatments.
Currently we are in the middle of a £35million redevelopment to expand radiotherapy and oncology services on the James Cook site – one of the largest hospitals of its type in Europe – and are looking to create a centralised high dependency unit.
Our overall strategy to achieving high quality patient-centred care is based on four key themes (corporate objectives) which are:
Some of our key strategic areas we will continue to focus on are cancer, children's services, major trauma, stroke and cardiovascular services.
‘The NHS in north east England will be the leader in excellence in health improvement and healthcare services’
The Friarage is a smaller district general hospital which hosts the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit.
We are strengthening our academic base in research and development working in partnership with some of the UK's leading medical schools – the Universities of Teesside, Durham and Newcastle – and have a purpose-built academic centre with medical students undertaking their clinical placements on site. The trust is also the host site for the County Durham and Tees Valley Local Clinical Research Network and for the North East Research Design Service.
