Our mission at Selly Park is always to endeavour to improve against our previous best. Our intake is multicultural and the majority of our students come from inner city Birmingham.
Our success in fulfilling our mission statement can be best appreciated by charting our academic progress over the past ten years. Academic results have improved year on year throughout this period. In 1998 50% of our leavers achieved 5 or more A* to C grades at G.C.S.E. In 2008, this figure had improved to 87% with 60% achieving 5 or more A* to C grades including English and Maths.
There are a number of good reasons why teaching at Selly Park is a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. Pupils, parents and staff play a vital role in creating a positive and supportive environment, so that each individual has an equal opportunity to attain her full potential, both academically and socially.
The College has excellent support systems in place to enable staff to deliver high quality lessons in a stimulating environment. These include a very effective discipline for learning programme, excellent mentoring systems for both student teachers and NQT’s and close co-operation between the senior management team and all staff to maintain the right environment for continuous progress.
A very important part of Selly Park’s vision includes working in partnership with other schools in both the primary and secondary sectors. Partnerships have significantly expanded through our commitments as a Specialist Technology College and has further increased since our designation as a ‘high performance specialist school.’
As a result we have been awarded the extra status of being a member of the R.A.T.L. (Raising Achievement Transforming Learning) group of specialist colleges. As part of our remit, we are working with other schools to help raise academic achievement.
A second important aspect of our outward looking approach is our international links programme. This has continued to expand and we now have links with schools in South Africa, Pakistan, Russia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Spain and Germany. Staff and pupils are given opportunities to visit partner schools and host visits from these schools at Selly Park. These links are organised in conjunction with the Comenius programme and the British Council.
As a Technology College, we believe it is important to facilitate a high-tech modern approach to teaching and learning, which embraces emerging technologies and emphasises the use of I.C.T in its broadest applications. To help us achieve this goal, the school now has a ratio of one computer to two pupils.
We are continually looking to employ inspirational staff who are interested in promoting personalised learning, are outward looking and enjoy working as part of a close knit school community.
