Initially founded as the multi-price retailer, Bargain Centre, in 1974 by brothers Laurie and Chris Edwards, the core aim was to transfer the exciting ‘hustle and bustle’ shopping experience of a market place into a unique and robust high street store.
The first store opened in Wakefield, after which Bargain Centre experienced a rapid expansion with 15 stores following throughout the Yorkshire region.
In 1997 the first single price pointed store opened, under the brand name of Everything's £1.
2004 then saw the business completely re-branded to Poundworld the first opening in Salford, Greater Manchester and to this very day with 90 stores nationwide and with a workforce of over 2,000, there is never a Poundworld to far away.
To this very day the most basic of retailing concepts has proved to be a massive success throughout the United Kingdom, with a product range consisting of over 3,000 products, including some of the UK’s and global leading brands, the ingenuity shown by the Edwards brothers over 35 years ago has created an everlasting legacy within British retailing history.
