About us

Merton Council

Once a year, for two weeks, the world comes to Merton to watch tennis. And like Britain’s latest tennis hope, Andy Murray, Merton Council has been improving year by year. In 2002, Merton was ranked as ‘weak’ in its Comprehensive Performance Assessment. In the last year of CPA, the Council achieved the highest possible score, and became one of only 26 Councils to be ranked as ‘four stars’ and ‘improving strongly’.

This rapid improvement has been in the context of limited resources and challenging efficiency targets - which we have met. Despite the financial restrictions, we are continuing to develop and improve services and face up to the challenges.  We are very clear about what we need to and have a sharp focus on our priorities, which have been shaped by local people.

This is an exciting time to join Merton Council. Like the rest of local government we have to make significant savings over the next few years, however, we will continue to make major investment in education in the borough through our schools expansion programme. Over the last decade Merton has seen its performance go from strength to strength. Part of our success is down to us putting residents at the heart of our decision-making. We know that key services including libraries, schools, children’s centres and our weekly waste and recycling collection service are valued by our residents, and these are the services we have worked hard to protect.

We have been a trailblazing council when it comes to developing successful shared services. Our shared legal service with the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames was the first of its kind in London local government. We have also set up a successful shared Human Resources service with the London Borough of Sutton.

Crucial to transforming and improving services is a workforce that is in tune with the council’s overall aims and objectives. In Merton we have a committed workforce who go the extra mile to deliver quality public services.
