Welcome

Thank you for replying to our advertisement.  I hope you will find this information pack a useful introduction to Dorothy Gardner Nursery.

Dorothy Ellen Marion Gardner (1900-1992) had a long career as a nursery and primary school teacher, lecturer and researcher in education and child development.   As Head of  Department of Child Development in London from 1943, she shone a light on the importance of early years education, and through her work established Dorothy Gardner Nursery as a beacon to deliver innovative and ground breaking early years education to children in London, an ethos which still lies behind our nursery today.

We continue to play a leading part in the development of the UK’s early years curriculum and and we have just recently been selected as part of the Westminster consortium of four nursery schools to develop the Early Years Teaching Centre project for the Department of Education. We are working on this project with our Federated (and next door neighbour) Mary Paterson Nursery School, with whom we work very closely.  The Teaching Centre pilot is an innovative and exciting project for us and one which will change the way in which we teach early years education in the future and will be central to the role of Head of Centre.

Children and Families are at the heart of the work of Dorothy Gardner Centre. Our lead role in the Queens Park Children’s Centre, now the hub for North West Westminster children centres, enables us to offer a full range of integrated children and family services for our area.  This is a highly valued service, with a very active group of parents and families who work with us in informing how this service should be delivered as we develop. The children who leave Dorothy Gardner at the end of their time with us, do so as independent, confident and creative individuals who have been nurtured, with the best of early years education expertise.

We have a challenging and innovative period of work ahead of us.  We are looking for a unique voice who can continue to lead in early years education in the UK and Europe, inform and contribute to emerging early years policy and ensure that our children’s experience with us continues to provide an outstanding start to their lives in every way.

We are very proud of what we do and incredibly excited about our future.  We hope you have an opportunity to learn more about this too.

We hope you find this information interesting and look forward to receiving your application.

Best wishes,

Marc Zanchetta and Fiona Weinbren.
