About Challenge College
We are situated in the Manningham, Frizinghall area of Bradford. The school has been in existence since 2000. We have a purpose built state of the art building that we moved to in 2002 and in 2007 we have a £6 million extension built. Attached to the school is a City Learning Centre hub who works very closely with the school. We have 998 students with 171 students at Post 16. Our Post 16 provision is shared with our partner secondary school Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College. Our school is multi-cultural and takes students from a diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds.
Student attainment on entry is significantly lower than the national average and we have a high proportion of students with Special Needs. The school has a Designated Special Provision for Language and Speech. Students make satisfactory/good progress while they are in the school.
Teaching at Challenge College
Our recruitment process is designed to get the best from staff at interview. We show staff our facilities and resources and they get opportunities to meet and chat with existing staff informally. We expect to see all candidates teach and we are looking for colleagues who make learning fun and exciting. You will have an interview with colleagues and you will work with someone from the senior team. We view recruitment as a two way process.
All new staff at Challenge College go through an induction process which begins before you take up the post, and continues through your first year with us. Our staff are well supported and they are very supporting of one another. New staff all receive a laptop and mobile phone as our planning is all electronic as is our mode of communication. During your first year the school will invest heavily in your professional development and put you through Critical Skills/Learning to Learn training. This investment is over £1500.
We value our staff and have an outstanding reputation for developing people for promotion. We ring fence jobs internally in the first instance to give our existing staff this opportunity.
Classrooms are well equipped and all contain interactive promethean whiteboards. The ICT facilities in the school are excellent. There is an excellent on call system for managing student behaviour if this is required. All departments are supported by a designated member of the leadership team. The school has Leading Edge and Technology School Status and this brings in extra resources to make learning more interesting and exciting in the classroom.
We have an integrated curriculum in Year 7 to prepare students as learners in a secondary school, where expectations of behaviour and attitude to learning is clarified and embedded consistently across the year group.
Student attitude to learning and achievement is tracked regularly every half term and comprehensive intervention is put in place to support this.
Students at Challenge College
Students are expected to turn up on time and dress smartly in full uniform. They are expected to be polite to staff and visitors and follow our Full Value Contract which they formulate and agree every year. Our behaviour policy and rewards are linked to this. Parents are in regular contact via the planner, newsletter and student reviews. Our parents are very supportive.
Students are expected to study hard and play hard and enjoy their learning and time at school. The School Council helps us to hear their views and address them.
We give high priority to celebrating the success of our staff and students. We are currently installing 9 plasma screens to help to do this.
