About Us

Bang & Olufsen - a legendary brand

When young engineers Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen began experimenting with radios on a remote farm in Denmark 85 years ago, they could scarcely have imagined how iconic their brand would become. Through the decades their products have set a standard for design excellence, innovation and audio-visual quality that has truly set them apart in one of the world's most fiercely competitive and fast-evolving technology markets.

Bang & Olufsen quickly outgrew its small farm workshop in those early years and moved close to Struer, where the company's headquarters are still based today. The firm started manufacturing cinema loudspeakers and amplifiers, but the sales breakthrough came in 1928 with the launch of a defining product - a strikingly stylish radio and loudspeaker powered by mains electricity rather than batteries.

Through the years that followed Bang & Olufsen created push-button radios, radio gramophones and even a complete film sound recording system, constantly bringing an innovative edge to everything the company produced. It even embraced the latest manufacturing techniques and materials, making its first Bakelite radio, the Beolit 39, in 1938. The developments kept coming during the 1940s and again through the '50s, when Bang & Olufsen produced its first television and made further breakthroughs in colour broadcasting, stereo sound and video.

Even from the outset, Bang & Olufsen products had always been aesthetic, but during the music and fashion revolution that swept through the 1950s and '60s the styling of almost everything it produced from radios, record players and televisions to amplifiers and loudspeakers seemed to catch the spirit of the era and highlighted a distinctive individuality that it has never lost.

But style alone, without progressive substance, would not have sustained Bang & Olufsen's increasing popularity. Its quest for perfection in sound, vision, and durability has been a guiding principle for the past 85 years. Its acoustic laboratories, gruelling product test facilities and insistence on using human as well as scientific evaluation of its developments also bear witness to its total commitment to quality.

85 years on, Bang & Olufsen continues to question the ordinary and create the extraordinary. Its products define its ultimate goal - to ensure that quality in everything, from research, development and design through choice of materials and manufacturing to the final product and care of its customers is second to none.
